Cocoa or Coca

Aid programs promoted by the U.S. development agency, for the installation of alternative crops to coca cultivation, a specialty of high Huallaga valley until the 2000, have significantly promoted the planting of cocoa CCN 51, a cloned hybrid Ecuadorian experimentation that is the basis of the revival of production in the valley of Huallaga

This variety offers of course the advantage of a strong resistance to disease and especially high yields up to three times more than other varieties. CCN 51 remains a standardization factor greatly reducing the interest of aromatic and organic varieties of cocoa.

However native cocoas, usuallay those grown in the region, called criollos, have been identified and described in the national classification of Peru. Happily they are still cultivated by small cocoa farmers who do not have sufficient resources to develop an agro-industrial economic model as the model imposed by CCN 51. These cocoa beans are of great interest for its organoleptic quality for professionals and amateurs of great chocolate. link
