Wasi-manta (from home)

Wasi-manta cocoa plantations spread over the southern slope of the Cordillera Escalera, in the region of San Martin, Peru. They are located in the mythical Puma Rinri site, in the heart of the Rio Huallaga canyon.

The plantations heights occupies a well preserved forest environment of around 800 meters high and are close to the area of protection of the regional natural reserve, Area de Conservacion regional (ACR). The plantations in lower area are about 300 meters high and occupies the left bank of the Huallaga, dominating the beaches and rocks lining the tumultuous waters of the river.

The quality of the land, its exposure and its environment make this site an area of choice for cocoa cultivation. Former plantations have been rehabilitated and are now productive, and new plantations of about 8,500 trees were conducted in 2011 and 2013. They are composed of native cocoa appreciated for the aromatic character of its fruits.

The Wasi manta challenge is to implement farming practices that respect the environment and to produce a high quality cocoa recognized for its organic caracter and its geographical location indications.
